Foundation’s management training proves its worth
2008-05-30
Following their enormous success last year, the Palabora Foundation is running a second Management Development Programme (MDP) in Phalaborwa, starting on 17 June. The intensive programme, which is designed to boost the business skills of partners in BEE businesses, has been dubbed the “mini MBA”. Judging by the success of last year’s entrepreneurs, the accolade was no exaggeration.
Sixteen entrepreneurs in the Ba-Phalaborwa area were given the opportunity to boost their business skills during the second half of 2007, courtesy of the Foundation’s MDP. All sixteen graduated from the unique six month training course in November. But did the course benefit their businesses?
In a follow-up survey of the entrepreneurs, it seems that the course has had far-reaching effects. Obviously their progress is down to hard work and determination, but the MDP graduates have achieved some notable successes in a very short time since the training ended. Here are some of the highlights:
- Cyfrance Matsane owns 30% shares in Rimiro (formerly Dick Smith). He reports that Rimiro is expanding rapidly as a result of the MDP and is enjoying the benefits of larger contracts, for example with Palabora Mining Company. They are also considering extending their business outside Phalaborwa.
- Regina Shokoane was sought out by the Mopani FET College and is now heading up their Business Unit.
- Flower Raner, previously working as a supervisor, has been promoted to stock manager at her company.
- David Chauke left Goteia to start his own business, Bahlengwe, and was already turning a profit by the end of the first quarter.
- Thomas Lekwadu of Thaba Investments has secured a large contract with Sasol Nitro.
Those who have not experienced a dramatic change have reported that the MDP opened their eyes and has helped them individually to grow within their businesses.
At the graduation in November, the European Union and the Small Enterprise Development Agency, who co-funded the MDP training, were keen to see whether their money had been well spent. Less than six months down the line, the graduates have proven beyond doubt that the programme was worth every cent.
Anyone who would like to nominate a promising BEE entrepreneur for the MDP should contact Jenni Fleming, programme head of the Foundation’s Business Development unit.
The Palabora Foundation’s Business Development unit is situated at the Leboneng Education Centre in Namakgale. Entrepreneurs can contact the unit on 015 769 5055.
