Eskom Expo for Young Scientists on 25/26 May 2007 at Phosphate Hall, Namakgale

2007-05-23

The Palabora Foundation, in conjunction with the Phalaborwa District Science Expo Committee, will be hosting the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists on 25 and 26 May 2007 in the Phosphate Hall in Namakgale. Young scientists from Lulekani and Namakgale circuit schools will be competing against each other for top awards and the opportunity to go to the Mopani Regional Science Exposition in Tzaneen and, ultimately, Pretoria for the national finals later in the year. The selected scientists then stand the chance to compete against top scientists from all over South Africa for bursaries and the opportunity to go overseas.

Among the schools competing at this year’s exposition are the experienced Kingfisher Private School, Laerskool Phalaborwa (Green School), Vuxeni High School, Hoërskool Frans du Toit and Laerskool Phalaborwa Noord (Red School). These five schools participated at the 2006 national finals in Pretoria. They will, however, be facing stiff competition from Meridian College, Sebalamakgolo High School, Maphokwane High School, Fauna Park and Namakgale primary schools, according to the schools’ expo co-ordinators in these schools, Mr J Raganya (Meridian), Ms N Rasefate (Sebalamakgolo), Ms D Moretsele (Maphokwane), Ms Khosa (Fauna Park) and Ms C Lebetha (Namakgale). The competition promises some strong rivalry. Watch out for Baranuka High School, Ntshuxeko High School, Lepato High School, Majeje High School, Nkateko High School, Stanbury Primary School, Relebogile High School, and Phulanibyihola Primary School. The principal of Baranuka High School, Mr J Mushwana, told me during my visit to the school last week that the school is doing everything possible to support his learners to make sure that the “so called experienced” schools sweat for the top position. If Expo were horse racing, the public would see a photo finish, with Baranuka among the front runners.

The Palabora Foundation and the District Science Expo Committee hereby extend an invitation to the general public and the media, the circuit managers, headmasters of schools, teachers and learners to come and view the projects that will be on display at the Science Exposition on Saturday 26 May, when the Exposition will be opened to the public from 8h00 to 10h00, followed by the prizegiving at 10h00.
