Foundation graduates show off their skills
2007-03-23
Namakgale’s Phosphate Hall was the venue for a great celebration last Saturday, toasting the successful graduation of 85 trainees from the Palabora Foundation’s skills training programmes. The trainees had completed their courses in Construction Masonry, Construction Carpentry, Clothing Production and Food Preparation. Special trophies and prizes were awarded to the best performers. After enjoying a special meal, graduates of the Clothing Production course presented a fashion parade.
The importance of the day was underlined by the attendance of over 250 people representing, amongst others, Foskor, Sasol Nitro, Palabora Mining Company, Forever Resorts (Impala Inn), the Department of Labour, NAFCOC and Mopani South East FET College. Reverend Mohlala was also present to bless the occasion.
Two of the VIP guests gave speeches to encourage the new graduates. Serman Motlhabae of Forever Resorts gave a motivational talk, emphasising the importance of quality and efficiency, and presenting opportunities offered by Forever Resorts. Bertha Maringa of the Department of Labour gave a speech about skills development. She urged graduates intending to start a business to register their business properly, and to ensure that any employees are registered for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) amongst other requirements.
Once the formal graduation was closed by Dr Malale of Mopani South East FET College, the current Food Preparation trainees delivered an enjoyable meal to all the guests. They had also decorated the hall for the occasion.
After lunch, the fashion parade entertained the audience, showcasing the beautiful clothing designs created by established former trainees. These fashion lines were followed by clothing made by the most recent graduates, some of whom will be coming back at the next graduation to join the established fashion designers.
The entire ceremony was a wonderful illustration of how the Palabora Foundation’s skills programmes empower unemployed youngsters to either set up their own businesses or gain employment.
The Palabora Foundation management and staff wish to thank all who supported the ceremony.
