Palabora Foundation trains 43 teachers

2007-02-12

Teachers and trainers at the workshopDeputy principals, heads of department and supervisors from the Foundation phase (grade R to 3) in local schools attended a two day workshop recently at Lulekani Community Hall.

The training was organised by Palabora Foundation after many of the newly appointed teaching staff recognised that there was a need for extra help with planning processes to bring them up to speed on creating learning programmes, work schedules and lesson plans.

Most of the new appointees were or are teaching in the Intermediate phase (grades 4-6) or Senior phase (grades 7-9) and therefore had very little knowledge of the Foundation phase. Their planning experience was based on the “8 Learning Areas”. Now, part of their role is to supervise Foundation phase colleagues who are teaching and planning for the “3 Learning Programmes”. They explained that they were in an embarrassing position because some of their subordinates were way ahead of them, due to the planning training sessions which had previously been conducted by the Palabora Foundation coordinator.

Among the 43 teachers attending the workshop was the Principal from Refentse Primary School, Mr Malatji, who spoke of the need to experience hands-on Foundation phase planning processes.

Participants were trained on how to develop the three levels of planning in the Foundation phase. They were also trained on their roles and responsibilities at each stage when developing these planning processes.

The leadership found the workshop very inspiring and informative and they are looking forward to the next workshop.
