Palabora offers more study bursaries
2006-10-13
The
Palabora Mining Company through the Palabora Foundation again offered bursaries
to PROTEC and Master Maths students to study for various engineering
degrees in 2007. Palabora has been consistently awarding bursaries to promising
students from disadvantaged background for many years. Some of the students
who received bursaries have now completed their studies and are back in Phalaborwa
working for Palabora. Recently Palabora received a prestigious award for its outstanding
contribution in the field of socio-economic development of the communities
surrounding the mine.
The PROTEC and Master Maths programmes are making tremendous strides in the field of Mathematics and Science Education around Phalaborwa. The PROTEC programme is sponsored by Palabora, Foskor, Sasol Nitro, Lepelle Northern Water, Standard Bank, Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Phalaborwa Chamber of Business, Professional Career Consultants and the Department of Education. The PROTEC programme has been consistently producing 100% matric pass with high symbols in Mathematics and Science.
On Friday 13 October 2006, the potential bursary recipients for 2007 were taken to the Palabora underground mine to get a first hand experience of the work being done by the various engineers and their teams. “We were in a different world altogether and amazed to see what is happening underground” the students commented. They thanked Palabora for organizing this underground visit which enabled them to get comprehensive information about the co-ordination of different engineering sections in producing the final product – copper cables.
The potential bursary students are seen above with Mr Danie du Toit who is the Organizational Development Superintendent at Palabora.
